A Little Real World Shopping Fun!

For a fantastic ending to our money unit, we had a little shopping fun in the classroom.  Thank you to my WONDERFUL classroom parents for their donations. The kids had some awesome items and candy to "buy" today.  Of course we used our classroom play money, and the kids actually got their money back after buying their items.  My parent volunteers said it would be nice if that part actually happened in real life.  :)  Well...... so we were close to making it real life.
THANK YOU sooooo much to everyone who made this possible!

Let the shopping begin!

Learning Numbers 1-10 in Kindergarten

Over the past two weeks in kindergarten, we have been learning all about and studying numbers 1-10.  We have been matching, sorting, clapping, tracing, writing, building, and counting everything around us to help us learn these numbers.  Here are a couple of our activities.

Match Mine with Numbers and Number Boxes
One partner had the number and one partner had the box with dots.  First, they had to cut up the pieces and bring them all to me.  Oh yes, don't worry..... I mixed them all up.  They loved it!!  Then they had to order the numbers and put the matching pieces together.

 Write the Room
I had pictures hidden all over the room.  They had to find a picture and count the dots on the dice.  Next, they had to find the corresponding picture on their paper and write the correct number.  They were like little investigators.  Actually BIG investigators.....look how hard they are working!!

Cooperative Learning in Math

In our classroom we use many of Kagan's Cooperative Learning strategies to promote engagement and collaboration.  These strategies (games as we call them), keep all of the students actively engaged  and they are held accountable during the "learning" activity.  Many of them don't even realize they are working.  They think they are simply playing games.  But really......that's what makes the "learning" stick!!

Fun With Symmetry

We sure had fun with our symmetry unit.  Yep, I sure did!!  I taped them right down the middle.  heheheh  They loved it.   This was a great way to demonstrate symmetry, since we are symmetrical, on the outside a least. :)
The kids also had a fun time painting symmetrical butterflies and building symmetrical shapes with the blocks.

Solid Shapes

This week we stared working on our solid shapes!!! Yeah!!  Today we ate our shapes and built them with marshmallows and toothpicks.   We used cheese for cubes, KIX cereal for spheres, Bugles for cones, and mini-marshmallows for cylinders.  First we sorted our shape snacks and then graphed the results.  Of course, we got to eat them when we were finished!  :)  Later in the afternoon, I gave the kids more mini-marshmallows and tooth picks.   I told them to try and build a cube, pyramid, and rectangular prism.  They ROCKED!!
